Why Certain Documents Fail More Often
Not all identity documents are created equal. Some documents are more frequently targeted by fraudsters, while others have older or less secure formats that make verification more difficult.
If your document fails, it doesn’t mean you’ve done anything wrong — it simply means the system needs additional checks to confirm authenticity.
Why some IDs are considered higher risk
1. Older documents still in circulation
Many countries issue newer, more secure ID formats — but older versions may still be valid. These older documents often lack critical security features.
2. Lower security standards in some document types
National ID cards in many countries aren’t required to meet international standards (such as ICAO passport standards), making them easier to forge.
3. High fraud targeting
Some ID types are more commonly targeted by criminals. Examples include:
- National ID cards
- Driving licences
- Certain foreign ID formats
These are chosen because they are widely used and easier to replicate digitally.
4. Document wear and tear
If your document is old, damaged, faded or scratched, verification may be harder.
Common reasons a document may fail verification
Your document may fail because of:
- Blurry or dark photos
- Light glare or reflections
- Cropped edges
- Missing corners
- Shadows over the photo or MRZ
- Faded holograms or damaged laminate
- Mismatched details (name, DOB, address)
Most issues can be resolved by retaking the photo in good lighting.
How to reduce the chance of failure
- Take photos in bright, even lighting
- Ensure all four corners of the document are visible
- Avoid reflections or glare
- Use a flat surface behind the document
- Double-check that your details match what you entered
If your document still fails
If repeated attempts fail, your verification may go to manual review. This is a normal process and simply means a trained reviewer will take a closer look.
